Turks and Caicos–FAQ’s

Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions I receive regarding Turks and Caicos:

FLIGHTS:   There are direct flights from many major cities in the USA including Atlanta and Miami.  Flights from Miami are only 1.5 hours.

CURRANCY:  US Dollars are used in Turks & Caicos.  Banks and ATM machines are prevalent.

DRIVING:  They drive on the LEFT side of the road in Turks. If you are comfortable driving on the left side (and going around roundabouts) you are welcome to rent a car, scooter or even ride a bike!

WATER:  The water in Turks is filtered and safe to drink.  You need not fear getting sick.

ACCOMODATIONS:  Most resorts are in the Grace Bay area and directly on the Bright/Grace Bay  Beach which is 12 miles long with great views of the sunset.  Most resorts offer guests full kitchens or kitchenettes.

LANGUAGE:  English is the main language on Turks & Caicos but because of the variety of nationalities you will definitely hear many other languages spoken during your stay.

SAFETY:  Turks and Caicos is one of the safest islands I visit.  I feel safe walking alone around town and walking the beach and have never heard of any crimes towards tourists.

FOOD:  Turks is known for it’s fine culinary experience and you will not be disappointed – the food everywhere is excellent with a variety of flavors from around the globe.  Turks continually brings in the best chefs from around the globe to cater to your culinary needs.

There’s more to do in Cozumel than scuba diving!

When most people think of the island of Cozumel in Mexico they think of scuba diving.  This is because the diving in Cozumel is amazing and worth the trip but divers are not the only ones who should visit this great island. Cozumel offers you a variety of activities for all ages and is one of the safest islands you will ever go visit.  Here are some things you can do while in Cozumel:

Visit Punta Sur (the South Point) and climb the lighthouse and enjoy the type of beaches that made Corona beer famous!  On the way you can stop at the mangroves and see the crocodiles.

Enjoy the ocean by kayak, Hobie Cat, canoe or boogie board!

Go shopping! There are many cruise lines that port in Cozumel and because of this there is amazing shopping downtown.

P7011061

Take a Tequila tour!  This is a must as you will learn how tequila is made, it’s history, and the different types!

DSC03319

Visit Chankanaab Park which has a variety of options for you including Swimming with the Dolphins, historical information about the Mayan people, a botanical garden, a great beach and snorkeling. You will want to spend the day here!

Great places to grab a bite to eat in Cozumel

When visiting Cozumel there are  many great options for eating and drinking.  Here a few options we recommend:

Margarittaville:  There is a large selection of water inflatables to play on before or after your meal!

DSC03355

Senior Frogs:  Always a good time – there is one in Playa del Carmen too at the end of the ferry line!

P6290862

Fat Tuesdays:  For those slushy drinks that don’t taste like there is any alcohol in them yet will knock you out! Located right downtown.

P7011075

Hard Rock Restaurant:  Free internet use!

P7011060

Casa Denis:  One of the oldest (if not the oldest) restaurant in Cozumel. Family owned (by a friend of mine) and run with excellent traditional food.  Having been around this long you know it must be good!

P7051258

Coconuts:  Beautifully located on the other side of the island. Busy when the cruise ships port. Be ready to see some ‘coconuts’!

The Hard Rock Cancun All-Inclusive Resort ROCKS!!

I had the ultimate pleasure of staying at the NEW Hard Rock Cancun all-inclusive resort. The hotel went beyond my expectations with great food, awesome entertainment and beautiful rooms/pool/beach!

P6220235

While there you MUST visit the Argentinian Steak House.  This was my favorite dinner location, but my nephew’s favorite was Zen, the Japanese hibachi restaurant.  So I guess you’ll just have to go to both and tell me what YOUR favorite restaurant is at the Hard Rock Cancun.

P6240555

Only at Hard Rock resorts can you pick from a large selection of Fender Guitars and check them out for FREE! Yes, I said FREE!  Take a day and play on these awesome guitars.  Don’t know how to play? There is a channel on the T.V. that will walk you through it!  How cool is that?!

P6240419

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Hard Rock without the fantastic Rock N’ Roll paraphernalia everywhere you turn as well as the amazing cover bands that play nightly.  There were shows for every age in your group – from Circus to Rock to Mexican wrestling…each night was an adventure!

Thinking about a Destination Wedding?  I saw a few weddings while I was there so I can confirm first hand that yours will be beautiful and individual.  Large or small, Hard Rock will make your wedding exactly as you dream it should be and you can relax knowing the Hard Rock will treat all of your guests like Rock Stars.

Tour Chichen Itza in Mexico

During my last trip to Mexico I took a day to travel to Chichen Itza which are some of the most amazing and mystifying Mayan Ruins left standing.  I highly recommend you take the day to do this but it’s important to hire a knowledgeable guide or you will miss out on a lot of the history and importance of the structures.

P6280744

Upon are arrival in Chichen Itza we were let to an extremely gorgeous buffet of both Mayan and Mexican dishes – yum!  There was even a Mayan woman making homemade tortillas!

P6280709

There is also a small boutique resort right on the property that you can stay at – this gives you the opportunity to tour the ruins without the crowds and at your own pace.

P6280719

Contact me today to hear what more Chichen Itza and Mexico have to offer you! You will not be disappointed!  christy@barediver.com or christy@caribbeanjourney.com

Dive Palancar in Cozumel are fantastic!

I have just returned from a 3-week trip to Mexico. During that stay I had the pleasure of diving with Dive Palancar with my group.  We have dove many islands with many dive operators but Dive Palancar now tops the list!

P7041196

If you are a diver you will note that some of the ‘small things’ Dive Palancar did for my group went beyond the norm and really made our week relaxing and rewarding.

P7041197

We had the SAME BOAT the entire week. This was nice because if you left an item on the boat on accident it was there the next day. We also knew the boat well and everyone was comfortable getting on/off/using the facilities.

P6300951

We had the SAME BOAT CREW per my request and because of this they knew the personalities of the divers, knew who to keep a good eye on and we got to know them so well that they became part of our group! If you dive with Palancar I highly recommend Louis (top photo) and Ismael (2nd photo from top) as they were super informative, knew where to take us and very easy-going.

P6300942

The boat was stocked daily with ice cold water AND we stopped at actual restrooms between our first and second dives! This was the first time in all my years diving we made ‘pit stops’ and now I’m too spoiled to not do this – totally awesome!

P6300962

Lastly, one of my very favorite parts was that the staff loaded and unloaded all of our gear to/from the boat. I did not carry ONE tank all week nor did I ever wash my own gear! It was all done for us! THANK YOU DIVE PALANCAR for a fantastic week in Cozumel!

Let me help you get to Cozumel and do some easy diving with Dive Palancar! christy@barediver.com or christy@caribbeanjourney.com
